Comparing Canada and Dubai Through Built and Natural Waters

Essential Question

How do water systems, natural and built, shape our relationship with water in different parts of the world?

About This Project

This project invites middle school students in Canada to explore water as both a vital resource and an unequal one by comparing their local natural water systems with the built water systems of Dubai. Through field trips, virtual exchanges, creative writing, and multimodal storytelling, students develop empathy, critical awareness of water privilege, and the ability to express ideas through diverse media.

Participants

Middle school students (adaptable for high school or community groups)

Places & Context

  • Canada: Students visit nearby lakes, rivers, and built water infrastructures like fountains or pools to connect with water systems firsthand.

  • Dubai: Students explore Dubai’s unique relationship with water through videos, interactive maps, and a virtual meeting with peers in Dubai. They learn about artificial lakes, desalination plants, and cultural practices tied to water use and conservation.

Key Activities Include

  • Sensory journaling during outdoor field trips to tune into sounds, sights, and emotions connected to local water.

  • Group discussions on personal and cultural relationships with water.

  • Comparative research on water access, costs, and sustainability in Canada vs. Dubai.

  • Creative writing through composing letters, poems, and two-voice dialogues to explore

  • empathy and the meaning of water across contexts.

  • Multimodal storytelling through posters, podcasts, short videos, and digital reflections.

  • Gallery walks and online showcase to share student work with families and communities.

  • Advocacy letters written to local officials or school eco-clubs to promote water conservation and education.

Why This Project Matters

  • Water Privilege Awareness: Students come to understand how access to clean water, often taken for granted in Canada, is limited or engineered in other parts of the world.

  • Global Citizenship: Comparing life in Canada and Dubai helps students build empathy, appreciate diversity, and think critically about environmental justice.

  • Multimodal Literacy: Students learn to communicate their insights through writing, visual arts, and digital platforms, building powerful literacy and storytelling skills.
